Daniel Bell - A Quotation about Religion

Daniel Bell in his Afterword 1996 of his book

"The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism",
on page 338, writes:

"Religions, in and of themselves, can be cruel and
unyielding, as we have seen from the Inquisition
to the *fatwa* of the Ayatollah Khomeini on
Salman Rushdie.  All embody the claims
of believers to absolute and exclusive truths.
All invoke the name of God.  But the fundamental
fact is that we do not know to whom God speaks.

"For me, religion is not the sphere of God or of the
gods.  It is the sense, a necessary one, of the sacred,
of what is beyond us and cannot be transgressed..."
